Types of Financial Aid

- Awards based on need that do not have to be repaid on the condition that student successfully completes coursework.

Scholarships - Awards based on some kind of special achievement, either academic, athletic, or service; do not have to be repaid.  Sometimes these awards consider financial need as well.

Work-study - Part-time employment through the college/university.

Student loans - Money borrowed from the government, a bank, or a school; must be repaid with interest.
  •  Subsidized loans - Interest does not accumulate while student is in school. 
  • Unsubsidized loans - Interest begins accumulating immediately.
Military benefits - Financial aid offered to individuals (or their dependents) for service in the U.S. Armed Forces.
